‌Velayati: Iran to stick to its fundamental values despite US threats

Damascus, August 10, IRNA – Supreme Leader’s Consultant in International Affairs Ali-Akbar Velayati said here Monday that Iran will stick to its fundamental values in confrontation with US threats.

Velayati, who was the country's former foreign minister, made the comment on the third and last day of his visit of Syria at a press conference at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic in Syria in response to a question on Iran’s possible reactions in the face of the mounting US threats.

“If the US is after urging Iran to abandon its fundamental values, it is making a dire mistake,” Velayati added.

In the interview in the presence of Iran’s envoy to Syria, Seyyed Ahmad Mousavi, Velayati further said that “Iran, despite such threats, which are a part of the launched psychological war against our country, continues its efforts aimed at strengthening the foundations of the country’s independence and development.”

The veteran politician said, “Iran also continues strengthening the foundations of regional cooperation and broadening ties with its neighbors, even though the Americans might be opposed to the idea.”

Pointing out that the main objective of his visits of Lebanon and Syria was accepting the invitation of a number of the Beirut–based Islamic world private radio television stations, Velayati reiterated, “The Islamic Revolution’s 31-year experience has proved that the sanctions leave no effect on the progressing process of Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, that is pursued under the supervision of the UN nuclear watchdog and in the framework of the nuclear-NPT rules and regulations.”

Velayati further said that “despite all these facts, Iran has besides its concerns regarding the type of negotiations and the participating sides in them, never abandoned the fundamental of talking on the nuclear issue.”

Velayati meanwhile in his press conference in Damascus evaluated his meeting during the past two days with the Syrian President, Prime Minister, and Minister of Foreign Affairs as “Very positive and constructive.”

Emphasizing that there is no contradiction between the Syrian and the Iranian stands over Iraq issue, he reiterated, “The issue of establishment of the (new) Iraqi Government is an internal affair related to the Iraqi people, and any decision taken by the people of Iraq in that regard is respected by us, as well wisher neighbors for that nation.”

Velayati further emphasized that “Iran has no particular demands regarding the establishment of a government in Iraq and we sincerely hope that the Iraqi Government would be established as soon as possible free from the interventions of the foreigners, in line with the interests of that country’s people.”

He added, “We also hope that Iraq would soon get rid of the US occupation and the people of that country would relying on their deep-rooted cultural and historic experiences reach national consensus on methods for ruling their country and the establishment of their government.”

Velayati reiterated, “Beyond doubt Iran and Syria welcome the cooperation of regional countries in pursuing joint objectives, whose samples can be seen in joint sessions of Iran and Syria with Turkey and Iraq, as well as the other regional countries, in line with preservation of the region’s independence and stability, and against foreign intervention and interference.”

Velayati considers Iran and Syria’s stands regarding the threats made against the regional countries quite identical to one another, reiterating, “We surveyed various issues in our meeting with President Assad and naturally both countries are both concerned and opposed to the large scale US military presence in the region, including in Iraq and in Afghanistan.”

Velayati emphasized, “We are sure that the United States and its allies at NATO would be urged to leave the region, because we are already witnesses to the signs for it. If the (former) Soviet Union gained victory in Afghanistan, so would the United States and its allied forces emerge victorious there.”

Regarding the Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah’s stands adopted in Lebanon in his meeting with the Supreme Leader’s consultant, he said, “Nasrallah’s stands were the same as those he had adopted in his public comments at the media.”

The Supreme Leader’s consultant added, “Nasrallah believes the accusations made by the International Court surveying the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri, who was killed in an Israeli plot, were merely politically motivated and were devoid of legal aspects, and those are also our stands regarding the recent accusations against Hezbollah.”

Velayati pointed out that the enemy’s intention in making such moves is intriguing discord among the Lebanese nation, reiterating, “Yet, the Lebanese Government, resistance and people have already proved their solidarity in confrontation with the enemy’s plots, including the recent Israeli attacks against Lebanon, and Hezbollah, too, has always announced its full support for the Lebanese Army in confrontations with the Zionist regime’s forces.”/end
