Newcastle remain a slim chance of making the NRL finals after a 30-6 win over Canterbury on Sunday
.
In front of 17,316 fans at a sun-drenched EnergyAustralia Stadium, the Knights ran
in five tries to one to keep their September dream alive.
Newcastle have now moved above Parramatta into 10th spot on the ladder on 22 points,
four behind the eighth-placed Warriors.
But the heavy defeat means the Bulldogs' finals hopes are all but over, stuck on 18
points with just four matches to play.
Gidley opened the scoring for the hosts in the sixth minute, running through some
weak Bulldogs' defence to score.
The Dogs responded and dominated most of the next 15 minutes but failed to find a
way through the Knights' defensive line.
And they were made to pay when veteran centre Adam MacDougall broke the line from
just inside his own half before a clever inside ball sent Jarrod Mullen clear, the
five-eighth then feeding fullback Shannon McDonnell for a 12-0 lead.
With half an hour gone the Bulldogs misery was compounded when Isaac De Gois reacted
first to a loose ball and crossed over to open up a three-try margin and an 18-0
halftime lead for the Knights.
The Bulldogs nearly scored off the first set of the second half but within minutes
they were 24-0 down after Cooper Vuna got on the end of a Junior Sa'u grubber, the
four-pointer awarded by the video referee despite the Melbourne Rebels bound winger
appearing to knock the ball on.
Just under 20 minutes later Vuna again found himself in the clear, the ball working
its way inside to Akuila Uate before the try-scoring machine generously handed the
ball to MacDougall who scored his 81st try for the Knights, one short of Timana
Tahu's all-time record for the club.
Five-eighth Ben Barba finally found a way through the Knights defence in the 68th
minute but it was a case of far too little, too late for the Bulldogs.
The Knights, who will probably need to win all their remaining fixtures and hope
results go their way to sneak into the eight, meet the Warriors in Auckland next
Sunday.
