Swans hammer Hawks in Sydney

Sydney used a blistering first-half onslaught to cruise to a 44-point win over
Hawthorn in their round 19 AFL clash at the SCG.
Sydney's 19.15 (129) to 13.7 (85) win was their 10th of the year and lifts them one
spot to seventh on 40 points, while Hawthorn (38 points) slip from sixth to eighth.
Defensive midfielder Kieren Jack had a massive influence early as the Swans bounced
out to a 47-point advantage at half-time.
Ryan O'Keefe kicked four goals for the Swans with three each to Adam Goodes, Trent
Dennis-Lane and Ben McGlynn, while Lance Franklin bagged four for the Hawks.
O'Keefe also played a strong defensive game on damaging Hawks utility Luke Hodge.
The Swans, who had won nine of their past 10 meetings against the Hawks at the SCG,
dominated the opening term, kicking five goals to one to grab a 27-point advantage.
Goodes kicked two early goals and Sydney's small forwards feasted on the aggressive
playing style of big Jesse White who provided a strong aerial contest.
The Swans slammed on another five goals in the second quarter to Hawthorn's two in
front of 29,431 fans.
Jack was doing a fine tagging job on Shaun Burgoyne and the Sydney midfielder was
also running forward and picking up 21 possessions in the first half.
Veteran Brett Kirk was dominant for the Swans with Heath Grundy providing plenty of
run out of defence.
Hawthorn had few contributors in the first half apart from skipper Sam Mitchell and
defender Brent Guerra.
Held by Jack to eight possessions in the first half, Burgoyne combined with Jordan
Lewis to help spark Hawthorn's fightback after half-time.
But two goals from O'Keefe and a late goal from Goodes allowed Sydney a 30-point
buffer at three-quarter time.
Franklin's two goals early in the last quarter brought the game back to life but the
Swans celebrated when first-year player Lewis Jetta slotted through a banana goal on
the run, his first major after 19 behinds this season.
Jack may come under scrutiny for a high bump in the second quarter.
Sydney play Fremantle in Perth next Saturday while the Hawks host Melbourne at the
MCG the following day.
