.FIFA delegation to visit St Pete, possible host of 2018 World Cup.

ST PETERSBURG, August 7 (Itar-Tass) - Members of the world's governing
body for soccer, FIFA, will visit St. Petersburg in the middle of August
to study the city's opportunities for hosting matches of the FIFA 2018
World Cup, a spokesman for the St. Petersburg city government told
Itar-Tass.
The official noted that the project on the construction of a new
soccer stadium in St. Petersburg was changed to host the FIFA World Cup.
The stadium is being built on the Kresotvsky Island under the project of
Japan's architect Kisho Kurokawa.
The FIFA delegation is expected to visit the construction site.
The project was launched in 2006, but the date of completion was
repeatedly postponed. In late 2009 it was decided to adjust the stadium's
design to meet FIFA standards for hosting the World Cup.
As a result, the stadium capacity was increased by another 5,000 to
accommodate 68,000 people, including 640 seats for disabled persons.
The stadium will occupy the area of over 254,000 square meters.

.Russia's university enrollment campaign calmer this year.

MOSCOW, August 7 (Itar-Tass) - An enrollment campaign in Russia's
higher education institutions is close to completion and the first lists
of enrolled students have already been announced.
Rectors of Moscow's largest universities believe that this year's
campaign is much calmer than that of last year.
The rector of Russia's leading engineering university - the Bauman
Moscow State Technical University - Anatoly Alexandrov said "this year's
enrollment is calmer and more conscious."
"Nevertheless, we see poor students rushing from one university to
another as they have an opportunity to apply to different higher education
institutions at once," he said.
However, several restrictions introduced by the Ministry of Education
and Science in 2010 considerably simplified admission commissions' work,
Alexandrov said.
The rector of the Russian State University for the Humanities, Efim
Pivovarov, expressed confidence that there are evident advantages of the
fact that beginning from this year every school graduate can apply to no
more than five universities.
"Last year we received 75,000 applications from university enrollees.
This year their number drastically reduced - we got 27,000 applications,"
he said.
Mikhail Eskindarov, who rules the Financial Academy under the
government, proposed to reduce the number of higher education
institutions, where enrollees can apply at once.
At the same time rectors noted that it is still difficult to monitor
in how many universities young boys and girls filed applications. Thus,
some students apply to more than five universities and this fact remains
unnoticed.
Rectors said this year's enrollment is much calmer as enrollees get
necessary information from those who applied in 2009, when the unified
state exam turned mandatory for enrollment to Russian universities.
This year the enrollment campaign consists of two stages. The first
wave took place from July 27 till August 5. The second wave of enrollment
will cover those universities that get vacant seats and takes place on
August 5-10.
Those educational institutions that will face the lack of students can
postpone the enrollment campaign until September 1.
