Japan to commemorate victims of US atomic bombing in Hiroshima.
TOKYO, August 6 (Itar-Tass) -- Japan will commemorate the victims of
the U.S. atomic bombing on the city of Hiroshima that claimed 140,000
lives 65 years ago.
A commemoration service will begin in this city right at the moment of
the atomic bomb blast at 8.15 am local time on August 6 (11.15 pm GMT on
August 5). At the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park the minute of silence will
be observed and the bell will strike to count it down. After that
Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba will read out the Peace Declaration with
the appeal to full nuclear disarmament.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan will deliver a traditional speech at the
commemoration ceremony. Alongside, the U.N. general secretary will deliver
a speech for the first time of the Hiroshima commemoration ceremonies. Ban
Ki-Moon arrived in Japan on Thursday and visited Nagasaki, the city that
was also hit in the U.S. atomic bombing.
Representatives from 70 countries, including the United States for
the first time, will attend the commemoration ceremony. U.S. Ambassador in
Japan John Roos will represent the United States.
Early in the morning on August 6, 1945, the Japanese air defence
forces spotted a small group of U.S. warplanes approaching Hiroshima, but
decided not to intercept them. A U.S. bomber flied freely over the central
part of Hiroshima and dropped a four-tonne atomic bomb. The nuclear blast
killed from 70,000 to 100,000 people instantaneously. Thousands of other
Hiroshima residents died of radiation sickness later. The survivors are
still suffering for radiation-related diseases.
