Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's family, friends to venerate his memory.
MOSCOW, August 3 (Itar-Tass) - Family members and followers of
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn have a day of remembrance Tuesday, which marks
exactly two years since the passing away of the writer who became famous
for his eye-opening works on the Gulag and for activity in the field of
human rights.
He is buried in the graveyard of the Monastery of Our Lady of the Don
in Moscow. Solzhenitsyn's widow Natalya told Itar-Tass a remembrance
service will be chanted at the monastery at 13:00 hours.
Solzhenitsyn's last will was to be buried at the Monastery of Our
Lady of the Don. He made this wish known to the Patriarch of Moscow and
all Russia Alexy II five years ago and received the Patriarch's blessing
for this.
The writer said he had many spiritual links to that particular
monastery, the graveyard of which was for two centuries the resting place
for the Russians who made an especial contribution to nation's
intellectual and spiritual life.
Solzhenitsyn is buried next to the tomb of Dr Vassily Klyuchevsky, a
19th century professor of Moscow University who played a particular role
in the rise of the Russian historical science.
Solzhenitsyn left over to posterity a huge oeuvre. He worked until
virtually the last day of his life preparing a 30-volume edition of
collected works with Natalya's assistance.
Natalya continues working on the edition now.
A Solzhenitsyn prize for achievements in literature is awarded
annually.
