NO FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM STATE ENTERPRISES FOR POLITICAL PARTIES : MINISTER

Jakarta, July 23 (ANTARA) - State Enterprises Minister Sofyan Djalil said he was sure state enterprises (BUMNs) would be neutral toward political parties and not give them any financial assistance.

"It's not permitted, and now, even a single cent will be audited by BPK (State Audit Agency). BKP is very meticulous. If a state company wants to provide funds to political parties, it means the company will dig its own grave as there is nothing that is not transparent nowadays," Djalil said here on Wednesday.

Under existing laws, BUMNs are not allowed to help political parties but BUMN executives in their personal capacity can help political parties as long as they abide by certain regulations, the minister said on the sidelines of an Asia HRD Congress 2008 which was officially opened by Vice President M Jusuf Kalla.

"It depends on who helps (BUMN), but there should be no exaggeration, there must be a limit. And as an individual he or she must not use BUMN money, the money should come from their personal accounts," the minister said.

If they use BUMN funds, they would be accused of corruption, he said.

The second direct presidential election in Indonesia will be held in 2009 and 34 political parties have passed the factual verification process and are entitled to take part in the polls.
