MP: Vienna Group talks unrelated to EU sanctions on Iran

Tehran, Aug 2, IRNA – Iran’s announcement for resumption of talks with the Vienna Group had nothing to do with the European Union’s recent sanctions against Iran, a senior member of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) said Monday.

Head of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi told IRNA that the talks would only focus on providing nuclear fuel for Tehran’s Research Reactor.

Members of Group 5+1, permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany, failed to timely fulfill their commitments bestowed to them by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about Iran, Boroujerdi said.

He added that if the Vienna Group succeeded to carry out their commitments, that would create a “new situation in resolving the problem of providing nuclear fuel for Tehran’s research reactor.”

Boroujerdi stressed that since the upcoming talks with the Vienna group is to be focused on Tehran’s proposed package for the EU countries, “it could be very helpful in dealing with international developments including the issue of nuclear disarmament, and consequently to the global peace.”

Iran has recently announced preparedness to resume talks with the Vienna Group on nuclear fuel swap. However, the group has not responded./end
