Hydraulic unit no.4 to be launched at Sayano-Shushenkskaya plant.

MOSCOW, August 2 (Itar-Tass) - Hydraulic unit No. 4 will begin
operation at the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower station on Monday, almost
a year after the accident. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will watch the
launch from Moscow.
The government press service told Itar-Tass that during a meeting to
be held in the format of a videoconference, Vice-Premier Igor Sechin, who
is currently visiting the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower station, will
switch on the 640 megawatt hydraulic unit No.4 from the central remote
control desk.
The accident at the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower station occurred on
August 17 last year. Out of ten operating hydraulic units three were
destroyed, another six were damaged. Two hydraulic units, No. 5 and 6,
that were least damaged, began operation earlier this year. Restoration
works on the station are expected to last four or five years. They will
cost 40 billion roubles.
After the launch of hydraulic unit No.4, Putin will hold a
teleconference to discuss further restoration works at the station.
Vice-Premier Igor Sechin, Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko, members of the
governmental commission for the restoration of the Sayano-Shushenskaya
hydropower station, Evgeny Dod, the chairman of the governing board of the
RusHydro joint-stock company, the governor of Khakasiya Viktor Zimin,
representatives of specialized Russian ministries and agencies, design and
construction companies, scientific institutes, enterprises that produce
equipment will participate in the teleconference with Putin.
"Commercial operation of the already launched hydraulic units 5 and 6
and the fourth unit which is going to be launched will make it possible to
develop the basic capacity of 1,920 megawatts, minimize the risks of flood
discharge and guarantee water supply to the population, industrial and
social facilities located in the lower pool of the hydropower station,"
the government press service emphasized.
"Hydraulic unit No.3 is to go into operation before the end of 2010.
After that, the capacity of the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower station
will reach 2,560 megawatts. That will make it possible to survive the
autumn-winter season of 2010-2011 without standard water discharge," the
source went on to say.
The unprecedented accident that shook the Sayano-Shushenskaya
hydropower station on August 17, 2009 claimed the lives of 75 people and
destroyed or damaged the station's main equipment. Rescue teams cleared
away more than 5,000 cubic meters of rubble, pumped out more than 277,000
cubic meters of water and collected 325 tons of oil emulsion.
The restoration of the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower station is to be
completed by 2014.
The Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower station is the biggest in Russia
and one of the biggest in the world. The station's design capacity is 6.4
million kilowatts, the average annual energy generation - 22.8 billion
kilowatts. Ten 640-megawatt hydraulic units are installed at the
hydropower station.
