Salehi proposal, a good conciliatory gesture: Pak analyst

Islamabad, Aug 2, IRNA - A senior Pakistan scientist Zafar Iqbal Cheema on Sunday described as a good conciliatory gesture the statement of the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
Iran's nuclear point man said that Tehran is ready to rethink its uranium enrichment to 20 percent if it is guaranteed that it will be supplied with fuel for its Tehran research reactor.
Talking to IRNA Zafar Iqbal Cheema said that the proposal by Salehi is a healthy sign rather it is the modification of the nuclear deal that Iran had earlier signed with Turkey and Brazil
“I think this is a good conciliatory gesture to resolve the nuclear issue”, he opined.
While Western powers accuse Iran of following a military nuclear program, Tehran argues that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) it has the right to peaceful nuclear technology.
"Enrichment is our right under the NPT articles and the IAEA statue, but this does not mean that we want to enrich all our reserves to 20 percent, since the Tehran reactor's fuel needs are limited," Salehi added.
Expressing his views Zafar Iqbal Cheema said that the statement by the Iranian official is for America, China and Russia.
The analyst said, “I think it is difficult to speculate what would be the reaction of UN Security Council powers, but I am sure that China and Russia would certainly respond to the proposal.
Zafar Iqbal Cheema said that, ‘We are not living into a fair world’.
He added that Israel is being helped in developing nuclear weapons whereas Muslim countries are being targeted.
The Pakistani analyst said Western media has recently reported that the US has developed a large conventional bomb which indicates that how much biased these people are.
Zafar Iqbal Cheema has been Professor of Defence & Strategic Studies at Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad since 1994, and Meritorious Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences there since 2005.
He has written extensively on a wide range of issues related to Pakistani security and has participated in many international conferences./end
