Conroy dubbed dumbest pollie in survey
Communications Minister Stephen Conroy is on the receiving end of another
dishonourable award, after being dubbed Australia's dumbest politician in a magazine
survey.
Zoo Weekly magazine conducted the online survey of 1200 voters to dub Senator Conroy
the dumbest politician, followed by Family First senator Steve Fielding, and
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.
Senator Conroy scored 23 per cent of the vote following a series of gaffes on
Labor's planned internet filter, a magazine spokeswoman said.
At the launch of National Cyber Security Awareness Week in Melbourne last June,
Senator Conroy puzzled listeners by declaring: "There's a staggering number of
Australians being in having their computers infected at the moment, up to 20,000,
uh, can regularly be getting infected by these spams, or scams, that come through,
the portal (sic)."
He later added: "If you were doing a banking transaction, or transmitting personal
information, (Google) could have hoovered it up, sucked it up into their machine."
Runner up in the Zoo survey was Family First Senator Steve Fielding, who has been
described as having the intellect of an earthworm by eminent scientist Richard
Dawkins, after saying he thought the earth was less than 10,000 years old.
Nationals Senate Leader Barnaby Joyce, Liberal MP Wilson Tuckey, former prime
minister Kevin Rudd, Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan, former Liberal Leader Malcolm
Turnbull, and Prime Minister Julia Gillard also made the top 10 list of dumb
pollies.
Senator Conroy is no stranger to unflattering accolades.
Last year he was nominated Internet Villain of the Year over the federal
government's unpopular plans for an internet filter.
Held in London at an annual Internet Industry Awards ceremony, Senator Conroy beat
the likes of French President Nicolas Sarkozy to take out the award.
