PRESIDENT INSTRUCTS MINISTERS TO FOLLOW UP INDONESIAN CHILDREN'S CONGRESS RESULTS
Jakarta, July 23 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono instructed ministers concerned to follow up the results of the 7th Indonesian Children's Congress 2008 as formulated in the meeting's document titled "The Voice of Indonesian Children.""Let us follow up the results of the Indonesian Children's Congress 2008," the President told ministers present at a function to observe Indonesian Children's Day 2008 (HAN 2008) at the Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park (TMII) in East Jakarta on Wednesday.
On the occasion, two children - Ida Ayu Upawita Dewi from Bali and Syukri from West Sumatra - read out the results of the congress which was held in Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday.
Summed up in "The Voice of Indonesian Children," the congress's results among other things said Indonesian children's goal was to be creative, smart, and qualified. Also that children deserved protection from all kinds of violence, exploitation, negligence and discrimination.
The congress also voiced children's need for protection from the risk of cigarettes in order that they may grow and develop properly in the future.
The Indonesian children also expressed determination to improve their understanding about healthy lifestyle, healthy reproduction right, the risk of contagious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, and drug abuse.
In the Bogor's Indonesian Children Congress, the children also voiced their determination to unite their peers in remote and border areas.
Besides instructing the related ministers to follow up The Voice of Indonesian Children 2008, President Yudhoyono also called on the government officials to implement Law No.23/2002 on child protection.
"Let us try to understand and to meet the rights of our children to have better care, health, education, recreation, and protection from all kinds of violence," Yudhoyono said.
The head of state said further the government continued to improve and to meet the rights of the country's children as stipulated in the law.
"Look at what the government has done in the past three years to improve the quality of children's education and welfare," the president said, adding that the government was seriously implementing Law No.23/2002 on child protection.
