Voting enrolments top 14 million
More than 14 million Australians have enrolled to vote at the upcoming federal
election, a 2.8 per cent jump since the last poll in 2007.
With the rolls now closed, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) revealed that
nearly 86,000 people were added in the week after Prime Minister Julia Gillard
called the August 21 election.
Since the 2007 election, 385,455 people have joined the electoral roll, a 2.8 per
cent increase, the AEC said.
Retirement-age Australians are a significant voter block with one in five enrolled
voters aged over 65. With 2.8 million of them on the roll, they outnumber the 1.5
million voters aged under 24.
