Thai PM: State of Emergency to continue in Bangkok

BANGKOK, July 27 – The current State of Emergency will continue in Thailand's capital, while it will be gradually lifted in 15 other provinces, Thailand’s Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said after meeting with security officials on Tuesday.

The prime minister met National Security Council (NSC) secretary-general Tawin Pleansri and Acting Police Chief Pateep Tanprasert Tuesday afternoon over the Sunday bombing in Ratchaprasong, the scene of the largest anti-government demonstrations, in April and May. The explosion occurred at a bus stop in front of a Big C department store on Ratchadamri Road killed one person and wounded ten others.

In the one-hour meeting the prime minister and others discussed the overall security situation as related to the bombing as a lead-up to the NSC meeting on Wednesday.

Mr Abhisit said further investigation will be done on methods used to make the explosive device, which is similar to two previous bombing cases.

Security must also be intensified as the incident affected public morale and Thailand's image. It can also cause panic and create rifts in the country, Mr Abhisit added.
Meanwhile, a survey by Suan Dusit Poll found nearly half of Bangkok residents support the extension of the emergency decree imposed in Bangkok since April 7.

The survey was conducted Monday and Tuesday by the Suan Dusit Rajabhat University by interviewing 1,304 Bangkok residents. (MCOT online news)
