Thai students win 3 gold, 1 silver medals at Chemistry Olympiad in Japan
BANGKOK, July 27 - Thai students won three gold medals, and one silver, at the 42nd International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Japan, and are to return home Wednesday evening.
According to Pornpun Waitayangkoon, director of the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST), Thailand has sent four young representatives from Bangkok to compete in the IChO held
in Tokyo July 19-28, in which 267 students participated from 68 countries.
Three gold medals were achieved by Alif Noikam from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Ketpakorn Chakornvet, and Pinnaree Tiamangkornpun, both from Triam Udom Suksa School, while the silver medal was won by Jiraborirak Charoenpattarapreeda from Suankularb Wittayalai School.
In addition, Ms Pinnaree also received the full marks for the theory exam this year.
The four students will return to Thailand Wednesday and there will be a welcoming ceremony at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport.
Mr Alif already won a silver medal at last year's IChO in the United Kingdom. He said he had trained himself by revising and doing exercises as much as he could to build his readiness for the competition.
He said he loves chemistry and biology, for he is into experimentation, which he said is challenging, while adding some part of chemistry's foundation can be used to explain phenomenons or mechanisms of biology.
Meanwhile, Ms Pinnaree, who also won a silver medal last year, said the competition provides chances for youngsters to follow their interests. She has gained many experiences while travelling, which are more valuable than pure acedemic knowledge. She also follows some principles of Buddhism to pay attention, focus and be disciplined in what she studies. (MCOT online news)
