Thai Defence Minister orders tightened security after bombing in capital

BANGKOK, July 27 – Thailand's Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan on Tuesday ordered extra security measures at key areas after a bomb blast Sunday killed one person and injured 10, while Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is due to meet the secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC) and the national police chief Tuesday afternoon.

Following the bombing at a bus stop in front of the Big C department store branch on Ratchadamri Road in Rajprasong Sunday evening, Maj-Gen. Ditthaporn Sasasmith, spokesman of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) said that the defence minister ordered security tightened at key areas as it is necessary.

Asked if the bombing was meant to create turmoil to continue the state of emergency, the spokesman said that normally the ISOC monitors the situation, and if there is any move to incite violence, the agency reports that to the government to make a decision.

Meanwhile, the prime minister will meet with NSC secretary-general Tawin Pleansri and Acting National Police Chief Pateep Tanprasert at 4pm at Government House.

The Big C bombing and the plan to lift the state of emergency is expected to be discussed.

The state of emergency is currently enforced in 16 provinces including the capital.

Red Shirt leader Jatuporn Prompan, an opposition MP, said he believed that the Big C bombing was aimed at continuing the state of emergency after former prime minister Anand Panyarachun in his capacity as National Reform Committee chairman urged the government to lift the emergency decree.

The bombing sent a clear message to Mr Anand that the state of emergency could not be lifted, he said, adding that he suspected the government was behind the bombing with an aim to justify the extension of the emergency decree. (MCOT online news)
