Chance of India winning gold at Beijing Olympic high: Survey
Mumbai, Jul 23 (PTI) Optimistic that the Indian contingent to the Beijing Olympic Games would perform better than at previous Games is high in the country, a survey hassaid.
"Indians are optimistic about their national team garnering a higher medal scorecard than at the previous Olympics," a survey by global financial services brand Visa onthe next month's Games said.
Seven in ten Indians are expecting their team to come with a higher medal count than they did at previous OlympicGames, the survey said.
The survey, covering over 500 respondents of diverse age groups across the country, found that the Indian team was likely to bag more gold medals than in any other previousencounters.
"Of the 505 surveyed persons from India, 65 percent felt that Indian team will win more gold medals in the Beijing Olympic as compared with the previous Olympic Games." "Indians are very passionate about sports, especially when it comes to watching their home team play. Our Olympic team boasts a number of exceptional athletes and hence we have a reason to be optimistic," Visa Country Manager (South Asia)Santanu Mukherjee said.
"Our shooting, tennis and archery teams will help usto win the medals," he said.
Asia-wise, the survey conducted on 4,556 respondents, said that close to half 48 percent of those aged under 40 were optimistic about the prospects of their Olympians winning more medals as against 32 percent of those aged 40 and above whofelt their team would win more medals.
Similarly, 46 percent of respondents under 40 were more optimistic about their team's chances of winning more goldmedals than those aged 40 and above 31, the survey said.
The survey was conducted in countries like Singapore, Japan, Korea, India and Malaysia. PTI
