Patel walks out of jail

Natasha Chaku Melbourne, July 23 (PTI) Controversial India-bornsurgeon Jayant Patel, who returned to Australia from the U.S.

to face manslaughter and other charges in the death of over a dozen patients, was Tuesday freed from a Brisbane detentionfacility on bail.

Patel, also dubbed as 'Dr Death', was freed from Brisbane watchhouse today after posting a bond of 20,000Australian dollars (USD 19,500), sources said.

The 58-year-old doctor was moved to an undisclosed location, a day after he was extradited from the U.S., theysaid.

Patel is facing 13 charges, including manslaughter for the death of three of his patients while serving as director of surgery at the Bundaberg Base Hospital in Queensland from2003 to 2005.

Monday, he arrived from U.S. in a Qantas Airways flight, escorted by Australian police officers and was takento a police watch-house before being produced in the court.

Magistrate Brian Hine granted him bail on a surety of 20,000 Australian dollars. He has been asked to surrender his passport, report to police three times a week, not to approach any international departure points, live at a place approvedby the Public Prosecutions Director and reside in Queensland.

Patel was directed to again appear before the court onSeptember one.

The doctor was in "good spirits" after he was granted the conditional bail. He, however, had to spent the night injail despite the court order last evening.

"He is in good spirits and is happy with the result," his lawyer Arun Raniga said. PTI NC
