Economist for enhanced Pak-Iran economic ties

Islamabad, July 25, IRNA -- A renowned Pakistani economist Qaiser Bengali on Saturday stressed the need to enhance Pak-Iran economic collaboration especially in the energy sector.

Talking to IRNA, Bengali said that Iran has surplus energy which could be very helpful for Pakistan to overcome its energy crises.

Bengali said that Iran could play a major role in the economic development of Pakistan by providing energy for the industrial sector.

The analyst held the opinion that “Pakistan-Iran should enter into more trade agreements to enhance trade between the two close neighbors”.

"The trade between both countries should be promoted at an advanced level", he suggested.

“There is a great potential to boost Pak-Iran economic ties and both the countries could take advantage of their expertise in many sectors”, he added.

Bengali said the freight cost on imported items would be very low between the two countries.

He said that Pakistan and Iran can enhance trade through the province of Balochistan which unfortunately has become a backyard.

“We can buy electricity for Gawadar and Pasni from Iran and that can be supplied from Iranian grid satiations very easily", he said.

He added that the shortfall of electricity is causing heavy losses to the economy of the country.

He said that the impacts of the energy crises will be felt for long time. “Long run policy measures are required to deal with the crisis”, he opined.

Bengali was of the view that though bilateral trade between Pakistan and Iran has crossed the figure of US$1 billion, it should be enhanced further.

He said the economic relations of Pakistan and Iran are very strong at government level but the private sector should also play its part to overcome the economic challenges being faced by the two counties.

The economist said that lot of work has to be done to improve cooperation between the textile sectors of Iran and Pakistan.

Doctor Qaiser Bengali is one of the most distinguished economists of Pakistan.
