EC sees 60% of electorate exercising right to vote in Sunday by-election
BANGKOK, July 24 (TNA) -- A minimum of 60 per cent of the eligible voters in Bangkok’s Constituency 6 is expected to cast ballots votes in Sunday’s by-election, the first election to be held in the capital following a bloody clashes between military and the red-shirted anti-government protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) two months ago, said Election Commissioner Prapan Naikowit.
While inspecting preparations at polling booths in the constituency. Mr Prapan ordered officials to strictly abide by the election law as the upcoming by-election in the Bangkok suburbs is vital and that no malpractice should occur.
He said unofficial results of the by-election should be known at about 8pm Sunday.
“The Election Commission reiterates that it will conduct the by-election [in an imprartial manner] and that it wouldn’t intimidate anybody. The election is a symbol in bringing back the democratic system to the country,” Mr Prapan said.
The by-election was scheduled to fill the seat left vacant by late Democrat MP Thiwa Ngernyuang who died of cancer on June 11.
Six candidates are contesting the by-election. However, the focus of the contest is between former deputy minister for foreign affairs Panich Vikitsreth of the ruling Democrat Party and Korkaew Pikulthong representing the major opposition Puea Thai Party.
Mr Korkaew is a core leader of the UDD and is now imprisoned after turning himself in to the authorities following the end of the Red Shirt protest on May 19. (MCOT online news)
