FREEDOM OF THOUGHT, SPEECH AND INFORMATION – SIGNIFICANT COMPONENT OF PRESIDENT ILHAM ALIYEV`S POLITICAL COURSE

Baku, July 23 (AzerTAc). “The Azerbaijan national press made a significant contribution to realization of our people`s aspirations for freedom, preservation of spiritual values, building and development of independent Azerbaijan state”. This assessment President of Azerbaijan Republic gave to the role of the national press in the socio-political life of the country on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of the Azerbaijan national press suggests exceptional importance attached to the national press by the leadership.
The Azerbaijan national press was founded on 22 July 1875 – date of the first issue of the “Ekinchi” newspaper, which became a guiding star of our people and united forward-minded intelligentsia. The newspaper published articles on the development of science, education, culture, art and agriculture, struggled for the cultural progress of the people, sharply opposed religious superstition and ignorance.
The President of the country signed an executive order “On marking the 135th anniversary of the Azerbaijan national press” on June 10 this year. This order gives concrete instructions to the Presidential administration to widely celebrate the jubilee and this remarkable event was marked across the whole country.
The solemn celebration of national press jubilees in Azerbaijan became a good tradition. This tradition was started in March 2000 by national leader Heydar Aliyev as he signed a decree on celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Azerbaijan national press.
There is no other country in the post-soviet area where the government, personally, the President pays so much attention and takes so much care of the media outlets, - towards not only those loyal to the government but also opposition ones. To make sure, one should look at a list of recipients of the state award and honorary titles on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of the national press.
At a ceremony to mark the 135th anniversary of the Azerbaijan national press, Head of the Presidential Administration, academician Ramiz Mehdiyev said, “formation and development of the strong and independent press, which is a source of unbiased information and devoted to principles of the state system and committed to national interests, constitutes a major course of government`s media policy”
Thus, the government has stepped up measures in recent years to upgrade facilities of the media outlets, assess journalists` work. The debt of media outlets including those from opposition was written off at the expense of the state budget. Since 2005, about 300 journalists have received state prizes and honorary titles and government provided a financial assistance to 30 newspapers in 2005. This assistance is being continued even now.
Moreover, the President issued an order this year to earmark five million manats from the President`s reserve fund included in the 2010 state budget to improve housing conditions of journalists and build residential buildings for them. Thanks to these actions, Azerbaijan is one leaders among CIS and Eastern European countries for the number of media outlets.
Freedom of thought, speech and information in the Republic of Azerbaijan is an important component part of President Ilham Aliyev`s political course.
