CSTO closely watching situation in Kyrgyzstan - RF deputy ForMin.
BISHKEK, July 23 (Itar-Tass) -- The Collective Security Treaty
Organization (CSTO) is closely watching the developments in the Central
Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan hit by ethnic violence in June, Russian
Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin said on Friday.
According to Karasin, the situation in the republic will be in the
focus of attention at a CSTO summit meeting in Armenia in August. "At
their summit in Armenia, CSTO presidents will discuss the situation in
Kyrgyzstan in detail," Karasin said. "SCTO will offer assistance to build
up Kyrgyzstan's security." Such assistance, he noted, is likely to be
rendered already in August. "We cannot waste time, the situation in the
republic might change any minute," said the Russian deputy foreign
minister.
Interethnic violence hit Kyrgyzstan's southern regions of Osh and
Jalal-Abad in June 2010. Clashes between ethnic Uzbeks and Kyrgyzs forced
the authorities to impose the state of emergency and a curfew that will be
in force until August 19. According to official statistics, the clashes
claimed more than 330 human lives. Some 2,300 people sought medical
assistance.
