PM Abhisit still confident of Thailand's economic growth

BANGKOK, July 23 – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday voiced confidence that the Thai economy would grow 6 per cent this year as earlier targeted, given a continued surge in exports.

He said the significant increase in exports in June stemmed from the global economic recovery. It reflected the strong economic fundamental of Thailand.

The impressive export growth, if sustained, would help boost the country’s economic expansion.

However, whether overall economic growth would be sustained depends on how soon tourism recovers and and how many workers have been made redundant, which seemed to increase in May.

“The economic growth targeted earlier at 6 per cent remains not out of reach, but all parties concerned must try to maintain growth and protect it from being adversely affected.

“Key risk factors the economy is facing now include the global economic uncertainties fueled by the debt crisis in Europe and [domestic] political difficulties.

Should these problems be managed smoothly as it is now, I think the growth target will be definitely be reached,” said the premier. (MCOT online news)
