China hails Russia's participation in East Asia summits.

BEIJING, July 22 (Itar-Tass) -- China hails the decision of the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to invite Russia to East
Asia Summits, the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on
Thursday.
"China has always spoke in favour of open and flexible cooperation
within East Asia summits," Kong Quan said.
"Changes in the regional architecture should promote peace,
development, cooperation and prosperity in East Asian," he stressed.
East Asia summits are held annually after meetings of ASEAN leaders.
The first such summit was held in 2005 in Malaysia. It was called on the
initiative of 16 countries, including 10 ASEAN member states, plus China,
Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, and New Zealand.
