MINISTER: CONFLICTS NOT CAUSED BY EXISTENCE OF RELIGIONS

Jakarta, July 22 (ANTARA) - Religious Affairs Minister Muhammad Maftuh Basyumi reaffirmed that conflicts on planet Earth were not caused by the existence of religions but by man's mistakes and his acts in misusing religion for evil purposes.

In real life man also often dragged religion into his conflicts thus compounding the problems, the minister said here on Tuesday in comment on the recommendations of the International Conference on Interfaith Dialogues held in Madrid, Spain, last July 16-18.

He said the conference was very important to man's civilization. It was attended by around 300 religious leaders representing Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Shintoism and Confucianism.

They agreed that human beings in principle were created by God from the same elements and therefore they had to be treated equally even though they were different in skin color, race or culture. Human beings possessed a natural gift to love but also a predisposition to become tyranical.

The existing diversity in man's religion, culture and civilization was one of the manifestations of God's power and was a crucial factor in man's happiness.

Therefore, religions and their symbols should be preserved and not be denigrated. A religious belief should also not be used to incite racism, he added.

Qouting some points of the Madrid Declaration read out by Dr Abdurrahman bin Abdullah al-Zaid, assistant to the secretary general of the Rabithah organization at the meeting, the minister said that the aim of all religions was to make man obey their God to achieve happiness, create a sense of security and peace among human beings, strive to strengthen mutual understanding and tolerance in the community despite differences in race and language, invoke noble values in life and resist all forms of extrimism and terrorism.

Preserving the environment from all kinds of pollution and environmental devastation were also an objective of all religions and cultures.

Religion and cultural values play a key role in preventing human beings from being involved in crime, corruption, drug abuse, terrorism., and in preserving the unity of families and communities in the face of all kinds of threats.
