GOVT POLICIES REMAIN CONSISTENT WITH ORIGINAL GOALS : PRESIDENT
Jakarta, July 22 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said all of the government's policies had since the beginning remained consistent with their original goals, namely achieving economic growth and the even distribution of its fruits.
"Since 2004, we have formulated development efforts to improve the people's welfare, namely polices which are oriented to economic growth and equitable distribution," the president said at a plenary cabinet session here on Tuesday.
He said the government had since the beginning given attention to three things, namely economic growth, handling of unemployment and poverty reduction.
"We have to be consistent with these goals, including fiscal policies which have to be in line with them. For example, we allocate a component of our expenditure to stimulating growth," he said.
The head of state said the budget allocation for capital expenditures and growth stimulation had continued to increase every year. In 2005, the government's capital expenditures' allocation amounted to Rp32.9 trillion. It increased to Rp89.1 trillion in 2008 and is expected to rise further to Rp99 trillion in 2009.
"All this is proof of the government's consistency in stimulating economic growth," President Yudhoyono said.
In reducing the unemployment rate, the president said, the government was providing funds through the people's business credit (KUR) scheme. The program is expected to cut the number of unemployment through providing capital.
"The funds already provided in the KUR program have reached Rp8 trillion and it is expected that the amount will increase to Rp14 trillion. With this capital, we hope that more jobs will be created," he added.
He said the government had also drawn up a number of programs aimed at reducing the poverty rate and improve the people's welfare.
Yudhoyono said funds set aside for poverty reduction programs continued to increase every year. In 2004, the funds allocated amounted to Rp19 trillion. This year, the funds already allocated totaled Rp58 trillion and they were expected to reach Rp70 trillion in 2009.
