Gunners still chasing Schwarzer

Arsenal have stepped up their efforts to lure Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer to
the north London club by offering him a player-coach role.
The Sun newspaper reported on its back page on Wednesday that Gunners boss Arsene
Wenger had provided the extra incentive in a bid to secure the 37-year-old Fulham
stopper.
Schwarzer's mooted move to Arsenal looked unlikely earlier this week after Wenger
indicated his club was no longer interested in signing the long-time Middlesbrough
keeper.
But Arsenal see Schwarzer as a short-term solution to their problems following the
lack of consistency from Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski last season.
Arsenal can also provide Schwarzer with the added attraction of Champions League
action.
The sticking point appears to be money with Arsenal's initial offer of STG2 million
($A3.45 million) for Schwarzer rejected by Fulham.
Arsenal have been linked with a STG4 million ($A6.91 million) offer but any deal
will be on hold until Fulham appoint a new manager.
Roy Hodgson left Craven Cottage for Liverpool earlier this month and the southwest
London club are chasing former Tottenham boss Martin Jol from Dutch powerhouse Ajax.
