NKorea criticizes Seoul for intentions to hold manoeuvres with USA
.
21/7 Tass 229
PYONGYANG, July 21 (Itar-Tass) - North Korea's leading newspaper
Rodong Sinmun criticized on Wednesday intentions of the USA and South
Korea to hold a series of naval manoeuvres in the Yellow Sea and the Sea
of Japan, saying this runs counter to the recent statement of the U.N.
Security Council with an appeal to solve problems of the Korean Peninsula
peacefully.
The newspaper stresses that the decision of South Korea to participate
in joint exercises in the Sea of Japan on July 25-28 "testifies to
intentions of the Seoul administration to continue its anti-Pyongyang
course and intensify pressure on North Korea".
Thus, the South Korean regime "firmly sticks to the policy of
confrontation and ignores the possibility for a dialogue between the North
and the South," the newspaper stressed. It warned that in such conditions
North Korea would not remain "a passive onlooker and will take most
resolute return steps in case of aggressive actions by Washington and
Seoul".
The U.N. Security Council has condemned an attack on the Cheonan
corvette in the Yellow Sea at the end of March, but did not say who was to
blame for the sinking of the ship. The statement said the Security Council
condemned the attack and expressed serious concern over the incident.
It expressed condolences to the government and the people of South
Korea. The statement appealed for a peaceful settlement of all existing on
the Korean Peninsula problems, resumption of a direct dialogue and
consultations between the North and the South.
Speaking at a news conference in New York, North Korea's Ambassador to
the United Nations Sin Son-Ho called the statement a "diplomatic victory
of Pyongyang".
