Crean slams Coalition's education policy
The coalition's education policy tears a hole in its economic credentials, Education
Minister Simon Crean says.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott announced on Wednesday that a coalition government
would increase the 50 per cent rebate to $500 a year for each eligible primary
school student and $1000 for each high school student.
The rebate is currently $390 for primary school students and $779 for secondary
students
A coalition government would also expand school rebates to expenses that include
school photos, excursions, sporting and musical equipment, and private school fees.
Education Minister Simon Crean says the scheme misleads parents because it has not
been properly costed.
"Tony Abbott has created the first black hole for the Liberal party in this campaign
and our conservative estimate is that the cost will be at least double," he told
reporters.
"There is not one dollar of costing for the wider net.
"It starts tearing a hole in their economic credentials."
