Cabinet lifts emergency decree in three more provinces

BANGKOK, July 20 - Thailand's Cabinet on Tuesday lifted the state of emergency in three more provinces in the North and the Northeast, saying the earlier situation of political unrest now is under control.

The Cabinet resolved to revoke the emergency decree in Lampang, Roi Et and Sakon Nakhon, deputy government spokesman Supachai Jaisamut said.

The emergency decree has been enforced since April 7 as anti-government protesters of the 'Red Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) demonstrated in Bangkok and a number of other provinces.

The UDD leaders ended their protest in the face of an army operation to retake the protest site on May 19. The dead toll throughout the period was 89.

The Cabinet on July 6 extended the Emergency Decree in 19 provinces for another three months, but revoked it in five provinces including Si Sa Ket, Nan, Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Pathom and Kalasin reasoning that their situations were stable and security agencies could function normally to maintain order.

The emergency law bans public gatherings of more than five people and allows security forces to detain suspects for 30 days without charges.

The state of emergency remains in place in 16 other provinces including the capital. (MCOT online news)
