US tribunal starts trial of Yemeni Guantanamo detainee

WASHINGTON, July 22 (Saba) - A US military tribunal started on Monday the trial of Salim Ahmed Hamdan, detained at the Gunantanamo bay for more than six years and convicted of terrorism-relatedcharges.

Hamdan is expected to receive a life sentence, since he is facing charges ranging from supporting al-Qaeda financially and as he was the driver and personal guard of the al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

Hamdan, 38 years old, who was arrested in 1996, was registered by the US as the prisoner No. 149.

Hamdan, who was born in the province of Hadramout, received training at al-Qaeda camps in Afghanistan and was the person in charge of carrying weapons to al-Qaeda members during the Taliban rule.

The trial is going ahead despite a Supreme Court ruling that affirmed Guantanamo detainees have the right to challenge their detention in a civilian court.

The executive director of the National Organization for Defending Rights & Freedoms HOOD, lawyer Khalid al-Anisi said the trial is illegal and denied.

He the tribunal decisions are war decisions and considered by human rights activists not effective. However, he added these decisions are subject to appeal befor the US constitutional court.
