Swans outclass Blues by 39 points
Sydney outclassed Carlton by 39 points at Etihad Stadium on Sunday to loosen the
Blues' position in the AFL top eight.
The Swans' 16.11 (107) to 10.8 (68) win came on the back of a superb first half and
was their first victory over a side currently in the top half of the ladder in seven
attempts this season.
Sydney used Rhyce Shaw as a one-out small forward and he finished with three goals,
while Adam Goodes ran rampant in the first half to inspire the Swans to a dream
start.
Sydney now have a 9-7 win-loss record and are a game clear of Carlton (8-8), who
occupy eighth spot but have Adelaide and North Melbourne breathing down their necks.
Carlton's defeat was their fourth in five games and came just a week after they were
walloped by 68 points by the Western Bulldogs.
Goodes orchestrated Sydney's great start, as he had 11 first-quarter disposals, a
couple of clearances and booted a goal after he easily out-marked Paul Bower.
Goodes continued creating a headache for Carlton in the second along with Shaw, who
booted two goals for the term, while young midfielders Daniel Hannebery and Kieran
Jack did great jobs in the middle of the ground.
Jack was so effective curbing Carlton skipper Chris Judd the Blues sent their star
to full-forward in a bid to ignite them, without success.
Sydney kicked 10 goals to three in the first half to make the game safe, and as they
did, the Blues showed no signs of breaking out of their malaise.
Carlton were well beaten for contested possession, again had little spark in attack,
made poor skill errors and allowed the Swans to play the game on their terms.
Carlton lifted with five goals in the third quarter but Sydney were still able to
answer every challenge through four of their own.
Onballers Jarrad McVeigh and Jude Bolton were also effective for Sydney, as were
backmen Nick Malceski and Ted Richards, who defended well and ran hard to link play
through the middle of the ground.
Sydney led by 54 points early in the last quarter and were headed for a big win,
until the Blues kicked the final two goals of the game.
Midfielder Marc Murphy was Carlton's best player, Shaun Hampson (two) their only
multiple goal kicker, while Judd and Jarrad Waite tried hard.
The Blues' Andrew Walker could also find himself in trouble for making front-on
contact on Ben McGlynn when the Swan had his head over the ball.
Carlton confirmed Walker was reported, for making forceful front-on contact.
