Ban on alcohol sales imposed in Kyrgyzstan's Osh region.
17/7 Tass 61
BISHKEK, July 17 (Itar-Tass) -- A ban on alcohol sales has been
imposed in Kyrgyzstan's Osh region where a state of emergency and a curfew
are declared, a source at the regional commandant's headquarters told
Itar-Tass on Saturday.
However, some entrepreneurs ignore the ban declared by commandant
Baktybek Alymbekov.
Osh regional law-enforcement and fiscal authorities in raids in the
city of Osh discovered spirits sales and removed alcohol drinks from 60
sale sites. One day alone, about 1,000 bottles were withdrawn from sales,
including in stores, cafes and service stations. The facts of violation of
the commandant's order are set down in reports, and those guilty will be
brought to account.
The alcohol sales ban was imposed with the aim to ensure public order
in the city and the region, officials said.
Mass disorders and ethnic clashes between Uzbek and Kyrgyz people
broke out in Osh overnight to June 11. The next day they spread to the
neighbouring Jalal-Abad region. A state of emergency and a curfew were
imposed in the conflict zone until at least August 10.
According to the official data, 316 people died and about 2,300 were
injured in the disorders. As was reported, more than 1,800 houses,
buildings and cars were burnt.
