Chulalongkorn Hospital launches robot facilitated venipuncture service

BANGKOK, July 16 – King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital managers on Friday introduced the first Thai-made robot to help facilitate blood collecting tubes for blood-drawing procedures in hospital.

Hospital director Dr Adisorn Patradul and Dr Thewarug Werawatganon, assistant director of Patient Support Service, said at a press conference that the robotic innovation was the brainchild of the hospital’s venipuncture clinic, aiming to lessen mistakes and to make blood drawing procedures faster.

After using the robot for one month, hospital officials said, it has helped shorten the time needed for patients to receive the service from 60 to 20 minutes.

Apart from preparing the blood collecting tubes, the robotic innovation, working with the information system, can arrange the tubes and deliver them to blood collecting counters accurately.

The robot currently facilitates blood collections for more than 500 patients a day.

The production cost is at Bt4 million (over US$121,000) which is cheaper than equivalent equipment imported from Japan valued Bt15 million (nearly $455,000). (MCOT online news)
