Japan, Britain to Issue Joint Statement to Deepen Ties

Tokyo, July 16 (Jiji Press)--Japan and Britain have agreed to issue
their leaders' joint statement later this year on measures to deepen their
bilateral ties in the economic and security fields.
In the statement, the two nations will spell out goals they will
achieve over the coming three years, according to the agreement concluded by
Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada and visiting British Foreign
Secretary William Hague Thursday night.
The statement will include concrete measures to promote trade and
investment and enhance cooperation in supporting Afghan reconstruction and
pursuing nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament.
Before the meeting with Okada, Hague met with Japanese Prime
Minister Naoto Kan.
Kan said Tokyo wants to overcome major challenges the international
community is facing, including assistance to Afghanistan, by enhancing its
cooperation with Britain.
Hague replied his country hopes to work even more closely with
Japan on such issues as climate change, nuclear nonproliferation and
development support.
Hague told Okada that Britain hopes Japan's Air Self-Defense Force
will adopt the Eurofighter jet as its mainstay fighter plane.
