Chinese, Japanese tourists begin returning to Thailand

BANGKOK, July 15 – Chinese and Japanese tourists have begun to return to Thailand in numbers, and more are expected to visit in the third and fourth quarters of this year, according to Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silapa-archa.

Speaking after a monthly meeting with tourism operators, he said the number of Chinese and Japanese arrivals in Thailand had begun to increase.

Unless there are untoward incidents in Thailand, the tourism situation would improve considerably in the third and fourth quarters of 2010.

As at the end of June, he said, the number of foreign arrivals reached 7,487,880, up 13.29 per cent from the 6,609,313 arrivals registered in the same period last year.

Unless there are untoward incidents [political disorder or violence], he said, the number of foreign tourists would surge to 14,975,760 as targeted.

The minister said that many countries which had earlier issued warnings against travel to Thailand had scrapped their cautionary messages. At present, Saudi Arabia is only the country which continues the warning. (MCOT online news)
