Cabinet extends state of emergency in far South
BANGKOK, July 13 – The Thai Cabinet on Tuesday extended the government-imposed state of emergency in the country's three southernmost provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat on the Malaysian border for another three months.
The existing measure is due to expire Monday and the new three-month extension, the 20th, will be in effect until October, Prime Minister's Office Deputy Spokesman Supachai Jaisamut said.
Insurgency-related violence in the region erupted in 2004, claiming more than 4,000 lives in the subsequent six years.
The cabinet also agreed in principle to restructure the National Security Council (NSC) to take responsibility for the government’s urgent policies.
The NSC reported to the Cabinet that its operations were directly linked to national security threats and the country’s security mechanisms in terms of protection and rehabilitation.
There is a new threat to national security including violent political activities and social rifts.
Changes in the national security situation indicated that the country faces high uncertainty and risks in the society, so the NSC must be restructured in response to changing situations. (MCOT online news)
