Thailand eyes Bt10 billion in orchid exports in 6 years
BANGKOK, July 13 - Thailand's Agricultural Extension Department is planning to expand Thai orchid exports to compete in the world market at a Bt10 billion (US$307 million) value targeted by 2016.
Twenty per cent of the export expansion is expected annually during 2014-2016, according to Director-General Ath Inthalak, who expresses confidence that Thailand's export value of orchids will reach Bt10 billion (US$307 million).
Thailand currently is the world's top ranked orchid exporter, with more than Bt2.7 billion (US$83 million) of blossoms and plants shipped annually.
In order to maintain export levels as well as quality standards and increase Thai orchid growers' world market share, the department will research new technology and develop new orchid varieties, and help develop growers' abilities for increased production, according to to Mr Ath.
The department will support a more active marketing campaign for Thai-branded orchids, but also will relax some red tape and restrictions on exports, expand existing orchid markets in Japan and the United States and penetrate new markets in Canada and the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Agricultural Extension Department and cooperating agencies are holding the 4th Siam Paragon Bangkok Royal Orchid Paradise 2010 on August 5-12 at Bangkok's Siam Paragon department store to commemorate Her Mejesty Queen Sirikit's birthday on August 12 and to lift Thai orchids to a higher level internationally.
This year, rare orchid breeds will be on display, while a competition of nine excellent orchid breeds will be held to obtain a royal trophy from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. (MCOT online news)
