Suthep: No House dissolution before Democrat Party dissolution ruling

BANGKOK, Jul 13 - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban stated on Tuesday that the House of Representatives will not be dissolved before the Constitution Court rules whether or not to disband the ruling Democrat Party.

Mr Suthep spoke in his capacity as secretary-general of the ruling Democrat Party after being asked by a reporter of the possibility of a House dissolution before the court delivers its verdict.

Considering a House dissolution now isn't his agenda at this moment, Mr Suthep said, emphasising that the central issue is solving the country's problems.

The Democrat secretary-general acknowledged that as a 32-year party veteran, he is deeply concerned as the case moves to court. The Democrats will definitely have to fight in court with the facts, he said.

Mr Suthep denied unconfirmed reports that a new "Thai Khemkaeng Party" has been registered to prepare for a possible Democrat dissolution, saying he was not aware of it.

He said the Democrat Party leader, secretary-general and party executives have not involved with the new party formation, adding that the Democrats have not prepared any exit plan as there is still time to fight in court.

The Democrat Party has been accused of violating the Constitution by receiving a Bt258 million donation, exceeding the legal limit, from TPI Polene, one of the country's leading cement manufacturers.

The ruling party has also been accused of misusing its Bt29 million allocation from the Election Commission (EC) political party development fund.

The EC resolved to dissolve the party, saying the two actions could be considered as concealed acts which violate the Political Party Act and the case was forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) to consider whether to file it in court for a final ruling.

The OAG on Monday completed its draft on the dissolution case and has submitted the case to the court Tuesday afternoon.

If the court rules to dissolve the party, over 40 party executives holding office during 2004 and 2005 could be banned from politics for five years. Among those is Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva who was deputy party leader in 2004. (MCOT online news)
