Russian scholar: Russia-Iran co-op, crucial for regional security

Moscow, July 13, IRNA – Founder of the Russian Center for Strategic Research of the Modern Religion and Politics, Maxim Shevchenko, says Russia-Iran cooperation is significant to guarantee security in the region.
Shevchenko told Nakano Nero news website that the US aims to fan guided conflict in the Caucasus and the US State Secretary Hillay Clinton's visit to the region falls in the same direction.
He said regional states, especially Iran and Russia, should thus be careful with that.
He criticized Russia for supporting the UN Security Council's June 9 anti-Iran resolution and said it should be taken as Moscow’s retreating its stances vis-à-vis Washington.
Maxim Shevchenko is Member of Public Chamber of the Russian Federation.
He is considered as one of the leading Russian journalists and expert on problems in ethno-cultural and religious policy.
He conducts the political talk show “Judge it” on Channel One TV, on pubcaster's radio "Vesti-FM" the analytical program "About the Main Thing with Maxim Shevchenko", and on the radio `Echo of Moscow', the weekly program "The Special Opinion with Maxim Shevchenko".
In 1990, he finished the Moscow Aviation Institute.
Later he attended courses at the Asia and Africa Institute of the Moscow State University.
He earned his journalistic experience as correspondent of the "Bulletin of Christian Democracy" and as head of society and cultural department of "First of September".
He was author, special correspondent in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Chechen Republic, Dagestan, former Yugoslavia, the Zionist regime of Israel and Palestine and editor-in-chief of the appendix "NG-Releigion" of `Nezavisimaya gazeta' and author and editor-in-chief of the magazine 'Sense'.
