OECD REPORT SAYS FOREIGNERS SEEKING ASYLUM IN TURKEY REACH 13,000

PARIS (A.A) - 12.07.2010 - An Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report said on Monday that the number of asylum seekers in Turkey reached 13,000.
The OECD's "International Migration Outlook 2010" report said there was a considerable increase in the number of asylum applicants from Iraq (comprising more than half of the asylum seekers)
According to the report, the remittances (foreign exchange from Turkish people working abroad) reaches 1.3 billion USD.
Also, the "luggage trade" made by migrants in Turkey reached 6.2 billion USD.
The OECD's International Migration Outlook 2010 says that the inflow of immigrants to OECD countries fell by about 6% in 2008 to 4.4 million people, reversing five years of average annual increases of 11%. Recent national data suggest migration numbers fell further in 2009.
