RI, US NAVIES HOLD "NEA 2008" JOINT EXERCISE
Surabaya, E. Java, July 21 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Navy and the US Navy began the joint exercise of "Naval Engagement Activity (NEA) 2008, Monday, as part of bilateral cooperation.
Commander of the Eastern Fleet Command Commodore Slamet Yulistiyono has officially kicked off the exercise at the Eastern Fleet Command Warship training center in Ujung, Surabaya of East Java.
Also present at the event was the US Commander Task Force (CTF) 73, Rear Admiral Nora Tyson.
"The NEA joint exercise between the Indonesian and the US navies has been conducted for several times and it was proven to benefit both navies," Slamet Yulistiyono said.
The exercise would run from July 21 to 26, involving 100 US Navy's personnel and 150 Indonesian Navy's personnel. The exercise would be held in Surabaya, Tuban and Situbondo.
Slamet said, the US Navy deployed four warships namely USS Tortuga, Ford, Jarret and USNS Safeguard.
"Most importantly, the joint exercise is aimed to improve soldiers' professionalism while enhancing bilateral diplomatic ties," he added.
The five-day exercise would include among others Centrixs test aboard the USS Tortuga, health symposium, military observer, US Coast Guard training, diving in Surabaya western sailing route and marines' training at Karang Tekok, Situbondo.
Both navies would join an exercise to lift a sunken ship's body from Surabaya waters.
In addition to training activities, participants would join various social activities such as development of sanitation and clean water facility in Tuban district, sport matches, and a collaboration in music stage between both navies and Purwacaraka school of music.
US Navy has committed to strengthening the cooperation with the Indonesian Navy and got a lot of benefit from this joint exercise, Nora Tyson said.
The US Navy would also have an "Open Ship" event to give local people, especially students, an opportunity to visit the US warships which are docked at Tanjung Perak Harbor.
