North Korea for developing cooperation with UN Population Fund.
11/7 Tass 33
PYONGYANG, July 11 (Itar-Tass) - North Korea will consolidate
cooperation with various international organisations, including the UN
Population Fund (UNFPA), said here representative of the national centre
for population census Jung Song-Il.
He made this statement in connection with World Population Day, marked
this Sunday.
According to Jung Song-Il, North Korea signed an agreement in 1985 on
cooperation with the UNFPA which "has made a great contribution to
training population experts and the development of the public health
system". Fund officers participated in the censuses in 1993 and 2008 that
"were carried out on a scientific basis in compliance with world standards
and encompassed all citizens, irrespective of their sex and age".
The representative also noted that the North Korean government carried
out a nation-wide check-up of the health of pregnant women, which is in
line with the targets of the UN Millennium Declaration. A regular plan of
cooperation between North Korea and the UNFPA is now drafted for 2011-2013.
According to the 2008 census, 23.34 million people live in North Korea.
