PM encourages BoT deputy chief to continue working in state sector

BANGKOK, July 9 – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday encouraged Bank of Thailand (BoT) Deputy Governor Bandid Nijathaworn, who was disappointed in the competition for the central bank governorship, to continue working in the state sector, saying he is a valuable person in the monetary and fiscal system.

Mr Bandid, a strong candidate for the top central bank post, admitted disappointment Wednesday at not being appointed to the position, but he affirmed he will continue working with the bank and is ready to work together with Prasarn Trairatvorakul, who has been entrusted to become new BoT chief.

“Both persons are suitable for the BoT governorship, but [only] one person must be selected. So, it is common for another to feel disappointed. I view Mr Bandit as a valuable person in the monetary and fiscal system and want to give him a moral support,” said Mr Abhisit.

The premier said Mr Prasarn, president of Kasikornbank, could use his perspective from working in the private sector to benefit management in the public sector, but there must not be a conflict of interest in his performance.

On reports that the Finance Ministry had approached Mr. Bandid to assume the top post of other state agencies, he conceded he told the finance minister to talk with the BoT deputy chief about the matter because he is a qualified person who deserves support. (MCOT online news)
