Government urged to work hard for national reform

BANGKOK, July 9 – The government should work hard for the implementation of Thailand’s national reform and the elimination of poverty, according to former deputy prime minister and finance minister Somkid Jatusripitak.

Delivering an address at the “CEO Talk” forum, he advised the government to accelerate working hard for implementing concrete reform for the country as the local economy might be in trouble next year since the global economy looks unfavourable.

He said the government must not hesitate to take measures to boost domestic consumption and the public's purchasing power.

It should not let the private sector alone drive economic growth because global demand is likely to decline, which will definitely affect the country’s exports. However, he believed the Thai economy will remain able to grow 5-6 per cent this year.

“Thailand is now relying on what it has done well in the past. The government must try to maintain it and be careful in administering the country. It should make an all-out effort to increase consumers’ purchasing power.

“All parties must overlook their conflicts. The government should commit itself to solve the political crisis. It should not work only for political gain,” he said.

In addition, Dr Somkid urged the government to accelerate eliminating poverty by creating income for people and distributing prosperity into the rural area. It must pay attention to enhancing the country’s competitiveness through innovative development.

Commenting on the appointment of Mr Prasarn Trairatvorakul as central bank governor, he said Mr Prasarn is suitable for the top post because he had much experience in the money and capital markets. (MCOT online news)
