Up to 790 displaced persons still in south Kyrgyzstan
BISHKEK, July 7 (Itar-Tass) - Up to 790 displaced persons still remain
in the Osh region of Kyrgyzstan, the epicenter of recent mass unrest,
sources from the Kyrgyz Ministry of Public Health told Tass on Wednesday.
The sources said they stay at three camps. There are underage children
and pregnant women among the so-called internal refugees. According to the
ministry, all temporarily displaced persons in the Jalal-Abad region have
returned home.
Mass unrest began in the regional centre of Osh overnight to June 11.
The next day it spread to the neighbouring Jalal-Abad region. A state of
emergency and curfew were imposed on the conflict zone. Additional army,
police and Interior Ministry units, as well as detachments made up of
volunteers, were moved to the southern part of the country. According to
the latest reports of the Kyrgyz ministry of public health, over 300
people died during the unrest, and some 2,300 asked for medical aid.
Dozens of people are still reported missing. Some 300 buildings and
automobiles were burned in the Osh and Jalal-Abad regions during riots.
According to different reports 300,000 to 700,000 people became refugees
or displaced persons during the unrest in the south of Kyrgyzstan. Almost
all of them have returned back to their homes.
