Few finer ministers than Faulkner: Rudd
Former prime minister Kevin Rudd says there have been few finer ministers in any
Australian government than outgoing Defence Minister John Faulkner.
Mr Rudd said he wished to place on record his deep personal appreciation of Senator
Faulkner for his service as defence minister and as special minister of state.
He also said he was proud to call John Faulkner a friend.
"There have been few finer ministers of any Australian government than John
Faulkner," he said in a statement.
"The Australian Labor Party is indebted to him for his service, just as the
Australian nation is indebted to him for his service."
Mr Rudd said Mr Faulkner took on the defence portfolio at a difficult time and
discharged his responsibilities with absolute dedication and distinction.
Those two qualities characterised his overall contribution to public service, he said.
"In the midst of an extended military operation in Afghanistan, his first priority
was the best possible protection of our troops in the field," he said.
"His comprehensive review of force protection requirements for our soldiers resulted
in major enhancements to existing arrangements in response to new and emerging
threats.
"John would literally worry every day and in every practical way about the wellbeing
of our troops, and for that I thank him."
Treasurer Wayne Swan said John Faulkner was a man of honour and integrity.
"All of us who care deeply about the Labor Party and the country will miss his
contribution to the cabinet," he said.
"He is a pillar of our movement and a great friend and I know his contribution will
continue in other ways."
