EXPERT WORKSHOP ON BIODIVERSITY HELD IN AZERBAIJAN
Gabala, July 6 (AzerTAc). The Expert Workshop on “Investing in Biodiversity and Maximizing the Benefits of the Green Economy” co-organized by the United Nations Environment Program and Azerbaijan`s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources kicked off here in Azerbaijan`s region Monday.
The workshop brought together experts representing some 30 countries of the Central and Eastern Europe.
The opening ceremony was addressed by Firdovsi Aliyev, Deputy minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan who told of the progress achieved to protect environment in Azerbaijan. He pointed out environment strategic programs are being usefully implemented in the country. The Year of Environment was announced in 2010 in Azerbaijan, he added.
The aims of this workshop are to outline the key policy requirements of a national biodiversity strategy through presentations and case studies on Protected Areas, ecological connectivity, species protection, links to international legislation and practice, and establish an active network of regional biodiversity experts.
Gabala also hosted the Pan-European conference of the parties to the convention on biological diversity NGO Preparatory meeting
As a follow-up to these events, a declaration will be signed on July 7. The declaration is set to give an impetus to protection of biodiversity in the participating countries.
