Eclipse fails to eclipse New Moon

(AAP) - It had one of the biggest opening weekends of all time but The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has failed to eclipse New Moon's box office record.

Eclipse, the third chapter in Summit Entertainment's vampire romance, raked in a
hefty $12.99 million in its first four days on the big screen in Australia, making
it the eighth biggest weekend opening of all time.
But it wasn't enough to topple box office record-holding The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
The second in the five-part movie series, released in November 2009, made $16.1
million at the box office, and remains Australia's biggest opening weekend of all
time.
The figures out of the US reflect the same trend, with Eclipse making $US68.5
million ($A81.31 million) on its first day to become the second best opening day
haul ever.
Second only to New Moon, which retains the top spot after debuting at $US72.7
million ($A86.3 million) when the film was released last year.
The Twilight Saga is based on Stephenie Meyer's four-part book series, featuring the
love triangle between teenager Bella (Kristen Stewart), her vampire boyfriend Edward
(Robert Pattinson) and her werewolf best friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner).
