Plastic bottle boat sailing to Australia
(AAP) - A crew sailing a boat made of plastic bottles from San Francisco to Sydney is preparing to set sail from Noumea for the final leg of the 13,000km voyage.
The Plastiki - a 20-metre catamaran made of 12,000 plastic bottles - departed from
San Francisco, California, in March.
The six-member crew is waiting for ideal conditions in the South Pacific, hoping to
cast away from Noumea on Tuesday.
The expedition is led by British adventurer and environmentalist David de Rothschild
- a 31-year-old descendant of England's Rothschild banking dynasty.
The crew says the aim of the voyage is to highlight the vast amount of pollution,
particularly plastic, that ends up in oceans, as well as overfishing and climate
change.
When the boat reaches its final destination of Sydney later this month, it will have
sailed nearly 7000 nautical miles, or about 13,000 kilometres, over more than 100
days.
While in Sydney, the boat will be moored at the Australian National Maritime Museum
at Darling Harbour.
